10% Alberta SR&ED Tax Credit

For Alberta Research & Development

Alberta corporations can now receive an extra 10% tax credit refund on top of their federal SR&ED claim. Effective Jan 1, 2009, the Alberta SR&ED tax credit program offers up to 10% refundable tax credit to corporations with a permanent establishment in Alberta incurring R&D expenditures after Dec 31, 2008.

The maximum credit is $400,000 per taxation year, based on 10% of the maximum expenditure limit of $4 million. The eligible expenditures, project requirements, and filing deadlines for the Alberta SR&ED claim follow the same rules as Canada Revenue Agency's federal SR&ED claim process. To apply for the credit, corporations must complete a claim form provided by Alberta's Tax Revenue Agency (TRA) within 18 months of tax year-end.
